Text (Latin)

1. Aria
O qui coeli terraeque serenitas
et fons lucis et arbiter es,

Unde regis aeterna tua sidera
mitis considera
nostra vota, clamores et spes.

Recitativo
Fac ut sordescat tellus
dum respicimus coelum;
fac ut bona superna
constanter diligamus
et sperantes aeterna
quidquid caducum
est odio habeamus.

2. Aria
Rosa quae moritur,
unda quae labitur,
mundi delicias
docent fugaces.

Vix fronte amabili
mulcent cum labili
pede praetervolant
larvae fallaces.

3. Alleluia

Translation (English)

1. Aria
O you who are the serenity of heaven and earth,
the source of light, and the judge.

Wherefore you rule your eternal stars,
kindly consider
our prayers, cries, and hopes.

Recitativo
Make the earth unclean
while we look to heaven;
have us constantly cherish
the heavenly riches,
and hoping for the eternal,
whatever is futile
let us loathe.

2. Aria
The rose that dies,
the wave that breaks;
they show the futility
of earthly pleasures.

Scarcely, with their charming faces,
seduce, while slipping
past on foot,
the deceitful demons.*

3. Alleluia

[*The deceitful demons, with their charming faces, scarcely seduce while slipping past on foot.]
